Stayed at  Altis - Lisbon, Portugal.
Lisbon is a beautiful city full of history and diverse architechure, tranportation both public and taxis is excellent and cheap. The bars and clubs though located in small side streets offer good value and nice atmosphere. The trips on the river and in nearby towns also offered great sites and historic places. I found the local cuisine a bit too bland for my taste, with a great deal of the food and pastries on permanent display which made them stale. Overall though a good place to see.

Taxis are cheap and plentiful, but ask for the meter to be turned on! But public transportation is great! Metro, buses, trams, trains. And they are easy to use. But do watch your wallet.

Our travels in Portugal by auto were wonderful, but Lisbon was a surprise. I didn't enjoy Lisbon as much as Madrid and Barcelona. We were shocked at the number of people begging in the streets...and they are very persistent and won't go away, dragging their poor innocent babies with them to tug at your heartstrings...then if you don't give them money, they curse you as they walk away. We even witnessed one beggar complain when a tourist gave him less than 2 Euros. I have never seen a beggar with a minimum before. Apparently efforts are made to keep Lisbon clean, but for some reason it seemed very dirty. There was a tremendous amount of litter at the door of the Metropole Hotel.

A beautiful, relaxed and friendly city. The old part with its hills, narrow streets, colourful wooden trams and buildings covered with decorative tiles is so full of character. Little alleys lead on to quiet, almost sleepy squares with a big tree or two providing shade for some elderly man sitting on a beautiful old-fashioned wooden bench watching the occasional passer-by and offering to help if he or she looks lost. Then a door opens and a bunch of healthily tanned children with dusty feet in sandals emerge to resume their play in the street. The new parts of town are well organised, clean, modern and elegant. Lisbon creates the impression of a culture and arts conscious city intent on preserving a nostalgic charm.

Nice to visit other Pestana hotels.

Superb destination with great ambiance and not overwhelming as Paris or London can be for first timers...Mediterranean feel with Moorish castles, Gothic churches, winding alleyways and old fashioned trams and funiculars. Private, yet helpful Lisboans with a long proud history.

Do one side trip to Sintra by train. First class restaurants abound in the $25-$30 per person meal range. See the Castello, Jeronimos Church and Monastery, Tiles Museum, Alfama, Bairro Alto, the Baixa, Churches such as Santa Roque and the Se Cathedral. Portugal is not a bargain destination but fairly priced and of course less expensive than northern Europe

We found that driving a car very stressful and challenging. The names of the streets (AVE and RUE) were difficult to see. The tourist attractions were difficult to park near. They need better parking places and better bike paths. I recommend taking tour buses if I were to come to Lisbon again.

There are some good restaurants nearby, especially the Casa do Alentejo and the Cervejaria Trinidade. The hotel staff can direct you to both. The Cafe Nicola downstairs is a pleasant place to spend either the day, on the sidewalk, or later, inside.

The city is very hilly. A good and cheap way of getting around was the Carri bus- and tram system. We went to Cascais/estoril by train along the coast, takes 45 minutes.

The closest restaurant-area is along Rua D. Duarte at the north-east corner of Rossio. Another is in Bairro Alto by Elevador del Gloria then to the left, many with Fado performance.

Alvor is fine for people seeking quiet, relatively unspoilt destinations. The original fishing village retains a charm which has been lost from many of the neighbouring destinations. It relies on its magnificent setting and I hope that the hotel and resort maintain their appeal to more discerning travellers.
